Boosting Digital Pathology with Machine Learning
We are now in the ‘Age of With’, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) doesn’t compete with human endeavors—it elevates them. Arguably, nowhere are AI applications more remarkable than in life sciences, drawing insights from massive data sets faster, processing data and automating workflows more efficiently, and converting insights into business performance improvements better than before.
Visium is collaborating with Roche to do exactly that. Together, they are leveraging AI to augment and support pathologists in assessing toxicity of drugs better and faster than ever, ultimately elevating patient care.
In April 2021, Visium and Roche co-presented their project at the AMLD to explain how ML technologies are streamlining toxicologic assessment in digital pathology.
The ML solution automatically identifies and discards healthy images, and provides interpretable heatmaps on lesion-prone images to guide pathologist's analyses more efficiently. This allows pathologists to focus their time on critical decision-making, and enables the provision of safe and effective therapies to patients, faster.
Assuming a more long-term perspective, automated lesion detection is a cornerstone towards automated toxicology studies, eventually combining the findings of different organs, species as well as other lab measures such as blood tests.
Find out more about this technology and its potential impact on the entire drug R&D value chain in this keynote by Visium’s COO, Matteo Togninalli, and Vanessa Schumacher, Group Head – Tissue Biomarker and Digital Pathology at Roche.
About Visium:
Visium was founded on the basis of a clear observation - there exists a growing gap between state-of-the-art Machine Learning (ML) as seen in academia, and its adoption in industry. Thus, in 2018, Alen Arslanagic (CEO and co-founder), Timon Zimmermann (CTO and co-founder) and Matteo Togninalli (COO PhD) embarked on a mission to democratize AI for the good of businesses and society alike.
Since its inception, Visium has become a strategic partner for some of Switzerland’s most iconic brands - supporting at every level of AI transformation, whether they are just entering the field or have an established data science department.
